Review- Manchester United v S.L. Benfica

Manchester United are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League after a 2-0 victory over S.L. Benfica. We need just one point in the next two games to secure passage to the next round.

An own goal from young goalkeeper Mile Svilar and a Daley Blind penalty was enough to see United earn all three points. In the first half Anthony Martial looked lively, constantly running at the defence and causing massive issues for their backline. His skill and quick feet earned us a penalty which was saved well by Svilar. David De Gea pulled off a great save to keep his clean sheet, he really is the best goalkeeper in the world. On the brink of half time, a Nemanja Matic long-range effort hit the post only to be turned in, unluckily, by the the back of a diving Svilar.

In the second half, Benfica slowly crept back into the game and defensive errors from Eric Bailly only gave them more confidence. Then on came birthday boy Marcus Rashford. As soon has he got the ball he looked to drive into the heart of Benfica’s defences, causing all sorts of problems. He was awarded a penalty three minutes after entering the field, this time scored by Daley Blind. It was a comfortable night for United.

Player Ratings

David De Gea 8

Did brilliantly to keep Benfica at bay.

Matteo Darmian 6

Was solid at the back, made some well timed challenges.

Eric Bailly 6

Played well but made a couple of poor errors which I hope he doesn’t do against Chelsea at the weekend.

Chris Smalling 7

Led well, was comfortable on the ball too.

Daley Blind 7

Well taken penalty, looked good.

Nemanja Matic 7

Controlled the midfield, as consistent as ever.

Scott McTominay 7

Impressed on his first Champions League start.

Juan Mata 6

Struggled to make an impact on the game.

Jesse Lingard 6

Again, struggled to get into the game but no player ran more than him in the first half.

Anthony Martial 7

United’s biggest threat until he came off.

Romelu Lukaku 7

Strong performance, link up play was good. Missed a good chance to end his barren run.

Substitutes

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 5

No impact after coming on for Lingard.

Ander Herrera 7

Did his job and managed the game out well.

Marcus Rashford 7

Won a penalty and looked dangerous down the left wing.
