Review- Swansea City v Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s men eased through to the last eight of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Swansea City. The manager couldn’t have asked for much more in a game where we had to bounce back from the disappointment in Huddersfield at the weekend.

Jesse Lingard scored both goals, one in each half. The first came after 21 minutes when Lingard coolly slotted the ball home from the edge of the box after a great flick from Marcus Rashford. The next came 15 minutes after half time when Matteo Darmian’s whipped cross was turned goal-wards by an onrushing Lingard. Swansea did come close to scoring in the dying moments of the game, but Sergio Romero pulled off a quick reaction save to deny the hosts.

The two youngsters, Axel Tuanzebe and Scott McTominay, impressed with a mature display and didn’t look out of place playing among the seniors. Tuanzebe, especially, was commanding in the air and looked very comfortable driving the ball out of defence. Two great prospects for the future.

The draw for the quarter finals is on Thursday at 4pm (UK Time).

Player Ratings

Sergio Romero 6

Only had a couple of saves to make on an otherwise quiet night.

Matteo Darmian 6

Very good cross for Lingard’s second.

Victor Lindelöf 6

Looked nervy but was much better than he was at the weekend.

Chris Smalling 7

Good performance, organised the defence well.

Axel Tuanzebe 7

Played well. If he continues like this it will be no time before he’s starting in the Premier League.

Daley Blind 6

Looked good, just the one nervy moment when he headed against a Swansea player and it nearly ended up in United’s goal.

Ander Herrera 7

Bossed the midfield. Needs to work on his long range shooting though!

Scott McTominay 6

Strong performance from the youngster.

Jesse Lingard 8

Two goals. He was excellent.

Anthony Martial 6

Good link up play but didn’t really cause the defence many issues.

Marcus Rashford 6

Beautiful flick for Lingard’s first but didn’t do much else.

Substitutes

Nemanja Matic 6

Settled the game down.
